Playlist for NaNoWriMo
« on: October 19, 2005, 09:52:35 AM »

Hey guys, I need help building up my playlist for NaNoWriMo.

I've been thinking that to get into my main character's head better, I want to listen to the kind of stuff she listens to, and apparently that will be some of the stuff I've been listening to kinda heavily lately.

This includes:
M.I.A.
some of that french hip-hop what Foolsgold and Rafe got me hooked on
Rilo Kiley
Nellie McKay
Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine"
Tom Waits

Now, what I'd REALLY like to add to this is early 20th century sounding music, but I don't even know where to begin to figure that out.  Stuff from the era of the flapper girl, the great depression, the war-torn 40's.  That kind of thing.
Instrumentals, because sometimes lyrics can cloud a writer's head while she's trying to BS her way to 50K words.
Oh, and more hip-hopsy things.
And really just anything that's at all similar to the stuff I listed above.

I'll list the character profile later.  I think that'll help give some insight into her musical tastes.

DJ Danger Mouse's "Gray Album"  (Beat'es White album vs JayZs Black album) would be pretty sweet.  Nate had a link to a place to dl it at one point.

Well, there was a swing explosion a while back with bands like the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Brian Setzer and that type of stuff.  If that's the kind of period-y music you're thinking about.

Negative on the swing, ghostwriter.

But that was a good thought... I might look into real swing music from back in the day rather than this revival stuff.

Period-y music.  Ha!  Like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Le Tigre, L7, etc.?

Jazz, Schmazz.  I'm sorry, I have to go that far: Jazz, Schmazz.

Okay, any of you kids heard the Ghost World soundtrack?  There's a couple of tunes on that that are perfect examples of the kind of sound I'm looking for.

And also, old time radio program sounding stuff, like they'd play in and around "Fibber McGee and Molly," "Life of Riley," oh and Bob and Ray!  And Burns and Allen!  But man, Bob Elliott, father of Chris Elliott, now he is a funny guy.

So anyway, yeah, maybe think "War of the Worlds," as well.

Oh yeah- my exposure to jazz is pretty much limited to the movie Chicago, which is one of the turdiest movies I've ever seen.  No jazz. Jazz leads way to jazz hands and that's never a good thing.

Oh good thinking!

By the way, check out this website- they have a mashup of Holla Back Girl and something by the Soggy Bottom Boys.  I was listening to it last night like, "I'm fucking dying here!"  I laughed so damn hard.  Oh, and there's some odd Sesame Street mashups there, too.

You want the Ditty Bops.  Check this out.

Maybe some Dresden Dolls.
Antony and the Johnsons if you want something a bit torchy and caberet, and if you can stand it.

Sweet.  Actually, I think I DL'd some Ditty Bops the other day, or some weeks ago or something.  Maybe.  Was there a thread about them on here somewhere?

Maybe some Dresden Dolls... maybe.

And I have some Antony and the Johnsons that I got from the library, I'll have to give them another listen.

Oh yeah, a trip to the library in Oakwood is in the near future.  They have an interesting and eclectic collection.

Oh, and I'm tacking on some Fiery Furnaces stuff.  Forgot to list them in my first post.

I'm just suggesting stuff in the genre, mind you.

I'm not a big fan of any of those groups. Or even a small fan or a fan at all.  Actually, "hate" comes to mind.

I think they just did a lounge act.  Does that ring a bell?
