My Comics hiatus is over.
« on: January 27, 2006, 01:44:42 PM »

So, after 10+ years of not reading comics (i stopped buying once prices went from $1 to $1.25, and thereby missed all the good stuff that has happened since)  I'm reading again.

I've really enjoyed Alan Moore, some Frank Miller, the sandman series, and I really like DMZ, which is brand new.

can anyone make any other recommendations?

Gotta run out for a bit, but when I get home tonight, I will heap upon you a veritable truckload of stuff you should be reading.

Be ready.

Quoted for emphasis. He'll give you a huge list to work off of, we're still working through the list he gave me over a year ago. Maybe you should wait until school done for the year before jumping into this again, Scott's probably gonna suggest a few that will make you want to read the whole series before moving onto the next title on the list.

Hey man,

Somehow I forgot to come back to this thread. Sorry 'bout that. Not sure if you'll even see this, but here's some stuff I suggested for seldon on another thread, which might be good to get you started.

All come with my highest recommendation.

100 Bullets (Vertigo) - Crime noir
Fables (Vertigo) - Fairytale characters in the real world
Y, the Last Man (Vertigo) - All the men on Earth are dead except one dude and his monkey
Ex Machina (Wildstorm) - Former superhero is now mayor of New York
The Walking Dead (Image) - Zombies have overrun the planet, and everybody has to stick together to survive
Kane (Image) - Crime fiction from the master, Paul Grist
Rocketo (Image) - Kid-friendly sci-fi book about a sea-faring mapper's journeys - awesome art
Dogwitch (Sirius) - Odd book about an odd woman with odd sexual perversions - also awesome art

I forgot to come back and post in here as well.  If you like DMZ, you owe it to yourself to check out Demo.  That was Brian Woods last series, and it was one of the best things I've ever read.  12 individual issues, all tied together through just the general theme.  I always liked Brian Wood, but Demo made me a huge fan to the point I'll buy anything with his name on it now.

If we're all on a Brian Wood lovefest, I'd suggest picking up Local from Oni Press.  It's written by Wood with art by Ryan Kelly, and in the same format as Demo -- 12 issues, 12 individual stories, all tied together by a common theme.  I'm actually enjoying Local more than Demo.

Here's some more recommendations:

If you like Kane, but you like superheroes, also, check out:
Jack Staff (Image) -- superheroes by Paul Grist.

Exterminators (Vertigo) -- this has Preacher vibe all over it (not that they're even remotely similar, but the vibe is similar)

I'll try to come back with more, but you can always check out my reviews for more suggestions.

I love Jack Staff, Allan. Great stuff.

On a side note, Have you read any of the "Albion" series? I know that Scott thinks it's a bit shit, I just wondered if that was the general consensus over there. A little too British for the International comic-buying community, perhaps?

I didn't check out Albion, but I picked up the first issue of Thunderbolt Jaxon, and yeah, I thought it was a bit shit.  It didn't really grab me.  The art was nice, though.

I AM looking forward to Battler Briton, but that's more because it's Garth Ennis writing war comics again, and I think his best comics are war comics.  And Preacher.

Battler Briton? Thanks, I'll look out for that one. The first (american) comic I ever bought as a young boy was Marvel's "The Invaders". I also enjoyed DC's "All Star Squadron" and "Blackhawk" a lot growing up, so BB sounds right up my street.
