I'm sure the music snobs will be along to poo-poo this soon, since he's pretty mainstream, but I like that one song.

I don't know how you're supposed to pronounce the name.  But I guess that's my own fault since I LEAP for the radio changey device whenever this comes on.  It's like the new Mumford and Sons of inescapable songs.

I can't stand Gotye.  But I don't deny his stuff is pretty good.  He sounds a lot like The Police to me, who I also cannot stand but music snobs love.  I just don't like that sound.

It doesn't help that he did a slow climb.  So before he was massively overplayed in mainstream, he was massively overplayed on alternative stations, and before that massively played in internet-streaming indie-ish stations, and before that on music blog sites....

it's pronounced Go-tee-yay (Gotye actually comes from Gauthier, a fairly common name for guys in Belgium and France).

Of course all the music snobs around the world despise the "overnight" mainstream success of a guy who's been at it over 10 years in mostly obscure fashion and now suddently has "sold out".  ::)

Or y'all is just anti-Belgian. I knew it all along  ;D

Nope.  I hate Australians.  Not really. But what's all this chip on the shoulder stuff about music snobs?  NPR loves Gotye.  They feature him like, every week.

I just don't care for his sound.  It's not my thing.  And I don't even mind hearing the rest of Making Mirrors, just so,so,so tired of Somebody That I Used to Love.

Like Butter, I rush to turn the dial (figuratively anyway, I actually just pick up the remote) when that song comes on, but he's nowhere even remotely close to Mumford and Sons on my personal hate scale.

Tickets are $40 in Raleigh. While I like him, I don't like him that much. Missy Higgins and Jonti are opening here.

The advantage to only listening to classical music in the car is that "Somebody That I Used To Know" hasn't been overplayed for me. I loved the SNL digital short.

I also still like Mumford and Sons.  :P

It's not a bad album and has a couple of songs I like, but another breakthrough hit with people going nuts like Adele, Tinig Tings, etc can drive you crazy. I wouldn't even mind seeing him if the hype / talent ratio was closer. It's easy to avoid this song if we did what we were taught to do years ago . . . don't listen to mainstream radio, ignore what the mainstream listens to and celebrate your own favs (even if they happen to match up with the mainstream every so often.

I never listen to mainstream radio, and truth be told, it was my 22 yr. daughter who brought Gotye to my attention last Fall, way before the hit single broke big here. I bought his latest album last Fall on a family visit to Belgium (months before there was even talk of a US release), when Gotye was already big in Belgium (where he hails from, he was born in Bruges, where I went to HS incidentally). Of course he moved to Australia at a young age, and where he eventually started dipping his toes in music. He was in a bunch of bands there starting in his late teens (15 years ago). This guy's been around, and this "overnight" success is just an accident, but hey, so much the better for him, really.

I think what pisses me off is that I originally thought "Somebody that I Used to Know" would be a cover of that Elliott Smith song that I love.  And when it wasn't, I was royally angry that he stole that song title.  Still am.  Fuck off, Goat-y.

stopped in his tent @ coachella just for a listen. i liked what he was doing. the tent started getting super crowded until it was dangerous for me, a short person. he played that one popular song, and the masses moved on to something else! i stayed and watched him play drums awhile, i had no idea that was the song of the moment
